Meet our Surf Witch Yujeong! Yujeong is 28, originally from South Korea and now a Gold Coast local. She is an absolute beach babe, who is always up for surfing adventures and is one of the nicest people you will ever meet!
How did you get into surfing and what do you love about it?
I started surfing in January 2019 with Tracey from the Currumbin Alley Surf School. I remember the very first time I stood up on the board, even though it only lasted for a few seconds. It felt like I was flying in the air and ever since then, I fell in love with it.
What I love most about surfing is:
– being in the ocean and moving with the waves
– I can see the sunrise in the surf
– I get to meet a diverse range of people
– It has made me a morning person
– I get to see dolphins, fish, whales and all the other sea creatures.
What do you do for work and any cool hobbies outside of surfing?
I was working as a legal secretary in the litigation department but I am taking some time off at the moment and looking for something new this year.
My other hobby is taking my dog to the beach or to the dog park. I love when she has a big smile on her face while running like lunatic.
Where is your favourite place to surf?
Definitely at Currumbin. I love the friendly vibes and I always feel safe to surf there.
Surfboard of choice?
I have two minimal boards. I started surfing with my Sotftech 7ft board and I still love it.
What has been your fave surfing experience so far?
One day I was surfing at Snapper early in the morning and there were 3-4 dolphins around me. It was probably the closest I’ve ever seen the dolphins in my life. I grew up in the city (Seoul, South Korea) so the only way I could see sea creatures when I was young was by going to the aquarium. This was a very exotic & surreal experience for me.
Describe your perfect Surf day (beach location, cafés, pre or post surf activity or tradition)?
Waking up early for a sunrise surf, seeing the sunrise over the ocean, green & glassy surf conditions, catching loads of green glassy waves with the surf witches, seeing some dolphins in the ocean. After surfing I head out to breakfast to eat an almond croissant and then have a post surfing nap.
What do you love about the Surf Witches?
I love how everyone is so friendly and welcoming and you can always find someone to surf with.
What advice would you share with other women starting out?
Just enjoy it. We’re not pros and we’re all here to have fun.
