Witch Wednesday – Meet Madalyn

Meet the lovely Madalyn! Maddy is 22 years old and is one of our devoted surfers that makes the drive down from Brisbane to surf.

What got you into surfing and what do you love most about it?

I have loved the sport for as long as I can remember! I used to fill my books with drawings of waves and people surfing (or just anything beach-related) in primary school.

I have so many fond memories of family beach-trips from when I was little and I had always wanted to learn to surf. I definitely loved it so much before I had even tried it!

I think what I love most about it is the escape factor – it’s amazing just being able to forget about everything for a little while and just enjoy being in the ocean.

I also love how challenging yet rewarding it is (don’t we all). Not everyone gets to experience the sheer joy that we get from surfing. Sometimes I forget how lucky we are!

What do you do for work? Any cool hobbies or interests outside of surfing you want to share with us?

I’ve been an office-temp for a while now, so my job situation isn’t too exciting but I do get to see a lot of different work-environments and work in many different industries, which is nice.

As for hobbies, I’m no professional, but I love photography! It’s great that so many of the Switches are photographers as well – it’s really inspiring. Another favourite pastime of mine is taking my dog to the beach (or just spending time with her in general), she’s my baby!

Where is your favourite place to surf?

Rainbow Bay and Currumbin Alley are my fave spots of the GC, but after a recent trip to Noosa, Little Cove beach and Tea Tree Bay are on my list of favourites now as well!

Board of choice?

My 7’6″ Mini Mal.

Tell us your favourite surfing experience so far?

There’s been so many! One of my most memorable experiences would have to be this one morning when I was at Greenmount, I had never caught so many perfect little glassy waves in my life! They were small but they went forever and it was definitely the most fun I’d ever had surfing.

There was also a time when I was paddling out at Rainbow and saw a whale, that was so special. Then lastly, of course, my first ever green wave – I’ll always remember that one.

What do you love about the Surf Witches?

Everyone is so welcoming and it’s just lovely being able to share the wonderful experience of surfing with so many other amazing ladies. I’ve already met so many fun, loving girls through the meet-ups and I can’t wait to attend more! Making friends in the surf has never been easier ️

What advice would you share with other women starting out?

Just do it! Make it happen, you won’t regret it. You’ve got nothing to lose and you won’t have to be alone – you have an amazing support network right here! 🙂
