Witch Wednesday – Meet Jacki

Meet our lovely Jacki! She is 29 and originally from Charters Towers in North Queensland. Jacki has recently relocated from Brisbane to the Gold Coast so we will be seeing a lot more of her beautiful smiling face in the surf!

What got you into surfing and what do you love most about it?

My 2019 New Year’s Resolution was to take a surf lesson, which I did, and then life as I knew it was over. I love every single thing about it – even the near drownings, the fin chops, the multiple times I’ve had to drop my board off for repair.

I can’t write this in a way that doesn’t sound wanky but it definitely feels more like a spiritual practice than a hobby.

What do you do for work? Any cool hobbies or interests outside of surfing you want to share with us?

I work in digital media for a big infrastructure project.

My boyfriend bought me a skateboard for Valentine’s Day so I’m currently trying not to break bones by riding it, so slowly, up and down my street, that I’m basically going backwards.

Describe your perfect surf day?

If I can’t be in Siargao in the Philippines, catching a boat full of boards out to a reef break, then I’ll happily take an early Sunday morning at Rainbow with the surf witches, my boyfriend and a dolphin or two – followed by something fried (and coffee.)

Board of choice?

7″6 mini mal

Have you got a funny surfing experience or story to share?

Not reallly funny…but I did crash the scooter my best friend and I were riding en route to a surf sesh in the Philippines, causing a three scooter pile-up which resulted in a rib injury, multiple wounds, broken fins…and we still went surfing afterwards…

I also lived in Brisbane until recently and would roll up to Currumbin Alley at 5am wearing my pjays. That was ridiculous.

What do you love about the Surf Witches?

The community of it and the friendships I’ve made. I love hopping out of my car, half-asleep at the crack of dawn and seeing the girls all hopping out of their cars, faces toward the ocean, ready to go do the thing we all love. I love being out there, surrounded by laughter, banter, cheers. Conditions don’t matter as much when you’re just out , having a laugh with a bunch of your friends.

What advice would you share with other women starting out?

Don’t let your fears or insecurities steal any opportunity to have fun from you. Just get out there.
