Witch Wednesday – Meet Tino

Meet Tino! Our little ball of fun & energy; Tino is 32, was born in Poland & grew up in South Germany. She moved to Australia 5 years ago & has been a GC local for the last 2 years. We LOVE surfing with Tino – she will always push you to paddle harder, go for bigger waves and try new breaks.

What got you into surfing and what do you love most about it?

I started with a friend three years ago who took me paddle boarding in the waves a couple of times. One day the waves were too steep for a paddle board and he gave me a surfboard instead. I had no idea what I was doing but just went for it and it was so much fun! My first surf was at the Alley.

I love the challenge, and the fact that the ocean always puts us into our place. There is something about the silence in the morning when you paddle out that completely makes me forget about all my worries. I also really like rougher conditions as I feel it pushes me to my limits and I am so proud when I get a good wave (although I get scared a lot haha).

What do you do for work?

I am a Neuroscientist. I work as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Queensland Brain Institute in Brisbane. I want to understand neuronal mechanisms of attention and error prediction and I use fruit flies as model organism to study this. On a daily basis, I make flies run in virtual reality arenas and measure their brain activity at the same time. It is pretty funky.

Any cool hobbies or interests outside of surfing you want to share with us?

If I have some free time I love to sing, write songs and play my guitar or ukulele. I also love skateboarding. When there are no waves, I usually take one of my skateboards for a spin.

Describe your perfect surf day?

I am a morning person so: Wake up in the dark, make a coffee, ride my bike to the beach, drink my coffee during sunrise and then surf glassy waves at my local beach break until I get hungry. After that I want to get the nicest fruit bowl and another coffee.

Board of choice?

If the conditions are right my Chilli Step Down 6’ x 20 ¼ x 2 ½. I got it from a really good friend I surf with. He is an amazing surfer and got me into surfing short boards.

Funniest surfing experience or story?

I once took off on a wave at the Spit and this guy dropped in on me. He fell ON me and he was sitting ON me while we were going down the line. We laughed so hard at that moment. I pushed him off me and finished the wave. It was unbelievable and I cried laughing.

What do you love about the Surf Witches?

Before I met you guys I had a serious lack of women to surf with! I love how supportive everyone is and how inclusive this group is. You guys give a lot of women the confidence they need to be really good surfers!

What advice would you share with other women starting out?

Wiping out is usually not as bad as it looks, so just go for it!
