Meet our beautiful Shona! When we first met Shona last year she had barely been on a surfboard – fast forward to today and we are continually amazed at how far this little lady has come with her surfing. She has no fear, 100% commitment, and the most positive attitude we have ever seen. Shona has (hopefully only temporarily) moved home to Darwin and we are so missing her – come back to the GC soon S x
What got you into surfing and what do you love most about it?
I am originally a snowboarder and a wakeboarder. Then I moved to the Gold Coast and really wanted to learn to surf, but didn’t know anyone else who did it. I use to walk past the beach every morning and wanted to go out but was too scared to go on my own. Then I found out about the Surf Witch group and Hannah took me out for the first time and gave me heaps of tips on what to do. Then I went out surfing almost everyday after that!
What do you do for work? Any cool hobbies or interests outside of surfing you want to share with us?
I am a Graphic Designer, wakeboarder and snowboarder.
Describe your perfect surf day?
Clean glassy waves on a quite beach with my friends.
Board of choice?
Either my 8 foot long board on a small day or a 5 foot fish board on a big day.
Funniest surfing experience or story?
I tried showing off to my friend Jody by riding the nose of my longboard but ended up getting dumped by the wave instead.
What do you love about the Surf Witches?
Always having friends to surf with! I also learnt so much by surfing with the girls. They all taught me so much and pushed me to keep improving.
What advice would you share with other women starting out?
That it is never too late to learn. Also it is good to go out with people who are better than you so you can learn from them and they will push you to keep improving.
