Witch Wednesday – Meet Angela

Its Witch Wednesday! This is one of our finest recruits!

It was a somber day at Currumbin with 1-2 ft waves when out of the corner of my eye I (@miranda_laidlaw) spotted Ange @a_little_adrift absolutely ripping on on her 9ft foamie. It was in that moment that I paddled up and said ‘do you want to join our surf gang?’… instantly I could see her light up (though obviously she was trying to play it cool at the time… but deep down I knew this was THE moment she had been waiting for 😂🤣)

In all seriousness, this lady kicks some serious but! Not only in the surf but as an Oncology nurse and now caravan renovator extraordinary @mr.albee.millard.

Have a read for all things Ange and her epic surf journey from her foamie days to her latest custom rig 👇👇👇👇

What’s your ticky box:
<17 years old

Where are you from originally?
I was born in Ipswich, grew up in Central QLD and then moved to the big smoke (Brisbane) when I started high school. I lived in London for 5 years & have now settled in Burleigh Heads.

How long have you been surfing and how did you get started?
I tried surfing a few random times throughout my teens and early twenties, but I really got into it around 6 years ago. I had developed a really great rapport with one of my patients who had melanoma. He was a surfer and when I was told he was on the ward with end stage disease I went up to visit him. He spoke so passionately about surfing & I promised him I’d give it a red hot crack. I got a lesson that weekend at ‘Walkin’ On Water’ surf school and never looked back.

What level surfer are you – whitewash warrior or chasing green waves?
Ha! That depends on the day. Ask any of the SWitches that I surf with regularly and they’ll give you a list of my regular excuses for why I suck that particular day. So sometimes I’m a whitewash warrior and other days I’m dropping bombs 🤷🏻‍♀️

What board are you rocking?
Ha!! WELL!!! I’ve been waiting on my 6”6 twin fin Fishy fish for approximately 4 months now! Her name is Magenta, she is beautiful and your board probably cannot sit with her! Hopefully, I’ll be out there on her any time soon!! In the meantime, it’s my 7”2 rainbow rocket by RocketAce Eco Surfboards (local GC shaper)

What beaches do you normally surf?
Burleigh is my local, and before I met the SWitches it was the only place I ever really surfed. Now I like the beachie at Miami (Shoutout to the Miami Vice crew), Kirra, and I love Cabarita – I lived there for 12 months but never felt like a local!

What do you do for work? Any cool hobbies or interests outside of surfing you want to share with us?
I’m a Clinical Nurse Consultant at PA Hospital in Brisbane. I coordinate a state-wide stereotactic radiosurgery service for people with brain tumours and other intracranial conditions. It’s full on so I try and surf at least 3 mornings a week before work.

My current hobby (/OBSESSION) is restoring a vintage 1977 caravan to his former glory! He has his own Instagram account and I seriously recommend everyone give him a follow because he’s pretty cute (@mr.albee.millard)

What has been your best surf or ocean experience so far?
Probably spending the first 6 months of 2018 travelling & surfing through North, Central & South America with my boyfriend. We were lucky enough to witness the power of the ocean at a firing Pipeline on the North Shore of Hawaii, surf endless empty breaks along the São Paulo coastline in Brazil, watch amazing sunsets from the water in Nicaragua. Jeez, I could write a book!

Any surfing goals you want to smash this year?
I want to do a roundhouse cutback. But like, a proper roundhouse cutback. Preferably right in front Jacki Casey so I can spray her in the face!

What do you love about the Surf Witches?
Honestly, Miranda Laidlaw mostly because she is just a fiesty little minx on a pink foamie. But also, I just love everything that I have gained since Miranda and Hannah first paddled over to me and said “Hi, do you live near here? Do you want to be in our surf gang?”. I’ve met the the most fun, funny, chilled, intelligent, varied group of women. These girls have supported me in the line up, got me out roller skating & skateboarding, introduced me to free diving, and they’ve also been there to listen to me when I need a debrief in life.

What advice would you share with other women starting out?
Show up to a SWitch event when we can have one again! Even if you just meet one or two new girls to surf with, It’ll be worth it!

And – because I know you’re ALL interested – @mr.albee.millard
