This week we are talking to our kick ass local eco-friendly business owner and fellow surf babe Lou Dever💕! Currently a sunny coast local, Lou regularly makes the trip south to the Gold Coast and surfs the beach breaks like a BOSS. Learn more about places this Switch has travelled to surf, and the different ways she stays fit to hit the waves! 👇👇👇
What’s your ticky box:
<17 years old
Where are you from originally?
Hmmmm tough one… A few places. Here is a list of all the places I lived from birth til 19 years old.
- Maianbar NSW
- Wanaaring NSW
- Grafton NSW
- Alice Springs NT
How long have you been surfing and how did you get started?
I have consistently been surfing for the last 6 years. Before that, I lived in Alice Springs so there was no chance haha
What level surfer are you – whitewash warrior or chasing green waves?
I enjoy either or. Wherever my friends are comfortable surfing is where I will be. Sometimes I even just bodyboard on my surfboard for some good times and lols.
What board are you rocking?
PANDA Astro Zombie 5’9″ or if i am feeling lazy I’ll get the 6’6″ NOTOX Korko out so I don’t have to try.
What beaches do you normally surf?
Palmy at 19th Ave or Tugun Sea Street.
What do you do for work? Any cool hobbies or interests outside of surfing you want to share with us?
I am the owner and operator or NOTOX Surfboards Australia. I don’t make the surfboards, but I do sort through our waste, co-ordinate the marketing and assist with research. I am also the one running around doing all the odd jobs that no one else wants to do. I am the company’s gopher.
What has been your best surf or ocean experience so far?
Definitely North Shore at Oahu. I was way out of my depth at Freddy’s, Haleiwa, and Chuns. But I had the help of the locals who were helping me paddle on to the big ones and giving me quite a lot of pushes on to those big boy waves.
Any surfing goals you want to smash this year?
I am learning how to use my body. The way in which I am learning is skate lessons with Clayton, golf lessons and also completing the Amanzi Surf Course. I have also joined the Exalto Gym where we learn to juggle and do handstands. I am hoping all of these land-based activities will help me learn how to use my brain to instruct my body to do what I want it to do. In short, I am aiming to be more coordinated and slow things down in my head.
What do you love about the Surf Witches?
Everyone is so friendly. No matter what level. Even if I do something so insanely stupid, I don’t feel stupid when I am with a couple of Switches. I have made some new friends on the Gold Coast too.
What advice would you share with other women starting out?
Get to know your body and how it moves. Grab some friends or make some friends who share the same values as you when it comes to lifestyle goals. And a big one for me is ‘the more you do the more you achieve’.
